But gone the days when expressing your views meant only talking about liberalization & women’s rights. Times have changed drastically & now with sudden media eruption, people have found that much awaited platform to speak on all the issues they want to speak about. Last night I was listening to BIG 92.7FM in Mumbai, there comes a show “Love Mein Twist” where the RJ, Kalindi was inviting listeners to come up and share their weirdest love experiences & confess anything they want. To add it up, she very fondly invited young girls and guys to get a chance to go a date with their loved ones… It was amazing to see how calls poured in and Kalindi just kept on trying to straighten their love twists. Its so amazing to see how radio has changed lives of common people. People who could not have even thought of approaching a national channel or a mainline newspaper, suddenly has the power to call up an unknown RJ, whom he has never seen and discuss his most intimate problem. I think this is where radio scores more than any other medium, where there is an instant connect between the RJ and the caller, irrespective of the caller’s societal status / bank balance or how he / she dresses up. The caller feels confident of the fact that his identity will never be revealed without his consent and since RJ is the person giving him the much needed gyan, the particular RJ becomes an instant friend. Such a sudden burst also gives the listeners a perspective on what’s happening in the society around. I mean the kinds of queries I heard on the show was astonishing! One guy confessed on how he feels the same way for two girls at the same time… other caller expressed how she feels insecure about her husband’s love post her pregnancy weight. One caller actually went on-air with her insecurity of hiding her sister-in-law’s secrets from her husband. A couple of years’ back, could we have even dared to go on a national media and speak about some of the most intimate secrets like this? Or even today, do you think you can go on a live channel or a mainline paper with your quotes on such topics & have your picture and image pasted everywhere??? Definitely. It’s the power of anonymity which gives the caller the freedom to open up and express his / her deep set secret. Its good & bad both. But on a positive note, its definitely boom which a common man had been waiting for, for a long time. It was a regular saturday and since I was feeling a bit lazy at home I decided to check out the latest mall which has come up in the city and hence dropped into Citi Centre. I was checking out different shops, had a cup of cool coffee and all of a sudden I saw a cublcle shapped structure at a corner. It was completely branded with BIG 92.7 FM. for a moment I thought it was yet another juke box kinda stuff but as I was starring at the stuff, few RJs came out and started gathering audience to play an on-air show and within seconds I was pushed back by the huge crowd which went near the juke box to witness what was hapenning Later I found out that the box was called "BIG Booth" and it was an on-air studio away from conventional studio. being a techie I was unsatisfied with the details I got hence I barged in pushing the crowd and came face to face with the booth. the booth was playing BIG 92.7 FM live and after sometime I saw a person sitting inside the booth speaking to someone and as I was reading his lips I figured out that whatever he was speaking was broadcasted on-air live. hence now I was satisfied that its an unconventional radio studio.
